First Timer’s Guide to Contribute to Paycrest

As a first-time contributor to Paycrest, we understand it can be overwhelming to figure out how exactly to contribute to our repos. On the flip side, Paycrest runs a builder’s group that creates a structured way for new contributors, especially first-timers to take advantage of.

Paycrest Builders Group

This builder group aims to create a pool of developers who actively contribute to Paycrest’s apps and protocol.

Why are developers important to us?

The fundamental growth of any new technology (including Web3) is tied to engineering. Whether the technology is emerging, like Virtual Reality/Crypto/AI, or more advanced, like Video streaming, engineers are always extremely important to ensure the tech exists.

To ensure sustainability, each technology ecosystem's developer pool must grow accordingly. A good way to think about this is how Web2 achieved it with regular OSS contributions—I’ll get to that later in this write-up.

Why Now?

According to Dan Romero,

Users don’t use protocols, they use apps. So if your goal is to build a protocol, you should build the initial app that’s high quality enough to earn the attention of enough qDAUs that developers start finding building on the protocol interesting.

The Paycrest team has always understood that it’s necessary to establish early end-user traction before putting efforts into growing the number of developers building on the protocol. This was the motivation for releasing Zap, Basepay, and now the upcoming Noblocks before this stealth launch of this Paycrest Builders Group.

Our Implementation

Overview: Our implementation merges the traditional web2 idea of OSS with crypto’s ethos of altruism and incentives.

Web2 OSS is approaching a point where the space's champions are speaking more openly about the non-existent reward system and how companies take advantage of employees’ work in hopes of a potential job or career advancement.

Our implementation considers this weakness, which is why our tickets/issues all have reward amounts tied to them. These are released on completion with the promise of token participation—more on that in the rewards section.
